Sprouts and shoots without dangerous germs
In a healthy kitchen, sprouts and shoots are indispensable. No wonder: they contain plenty of vitamins, minerals and fibre. They are also low in calories and rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids. But you should never eat them raw!
The Lower Saxony State Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (LAVES) reports that sprouts repeatedly feature at the centre of food-borne disease outbreaks. As a result, sprouts must not contain verotoxin-forming E. coli bacteria in 25 g during their shelf life. Trust is good, but checking is better.
If you grow your own sprouts and shoots at home, you cannot carry out such tests yourself. Our recommendation: fill a bowl with water, then add 5 ml of biostream® asepticaPRO or ZERO per 1 litre of water, add the shoots and/or sprouts and wait about 1 minute. Then rinse the shoots and sprouts once more with water. Done!
