biostream® ZERO for process water of drinking water quality

Disinfection of large volumes of water: for process water of drinking water quality, drinking water tanks and drinking water pipes in businesses.

Where businesses need large volumes of water of drinking water quality, the active substance chlorine dioxide fights Legionella, pseudomonads and E. coli, deep into the biofilm.

Process water of drinking water quality is an application of biostream® ZERO, in which water of drinking water quality, drinking water tanks and drinking water pipes in businesses are disinfected with chlorine dioxide.

Disinfection of process water of drinking water quality and drinking water tanks with biostream® ZERO

Effective disinfection of large volumes of water

biostream® ZERO is added in small quantities directly to the water being treated, where it fights bacteria.

Typical applications:

  • Drinking water tanks and large drinking water containers
  • Process water of drinking water quality, for example in food businesses
  • Basic sanitation of drinking water pipes and containers

biostream® ZERO is notified to the BAuA for product types 2, 4 and 5, including drinking water and the food area. It is not notified for product type 11, preservatives for liquid-cooling and processing systems.

Fighting E. coli, Legionella and Pseudomonas in drinking water

How the chlorine dioxide active substance works

Pathogenic germs are fought by the active substance listed under Section 20 of the German Drinking Water Ordinance:

  • Disinfection against bacteria
  • Kills Legionella, pseudomonads and E. coli
  • Penetrates and destabilises biofilms
  • Increases the water's redox potential
  • Breaks down odours

Your advantages

  • Ready to use within just 3 hours
  • Effective across the entire drinking water pH range
  • Suitable for aluminium tanks
  • 25 times lower dosage requirement than hydrogen peroxide (6 instead of 150 mg/l for disinfecting installations, DVGW code of practice W 291)
  • Highly effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, E. coli & coliform bacteria as well as Legionella (Legionella pneumophila)
  • No silver or copper as active substance
  • Oxidative action on cell membrane, proteins and genetic material at the same time, not at a single point of attack

Rules and standards for chlorine dioxide

  • Drinking Water Ordinance (TrinkwV), Section 20: chlorine dioxide is included in the list of permitted treatment substances for disinfection
  • DIN EN 12671: chlorine dioxide generated on site for the treatment of drinking water
  • DVGW W 224: methods for the disinfection of drinking water with chlorine dioxide
  • DVGW W 291 and W 551-3: chlorine dioxide as a proven chemical for cleaning and disinfecting installations
  • Guideline No. 5 of the working group of the German coastal states on ship hygiene: chlorine dioxide for drinking water on board
  • DIN 2001-2: drinking water supply from non-stationary installations such as motorhomes and boats

Use & dosage

biostream® ZERO is a two-component concentrate. Once combined, the highly effective chlorine dioxide solution is ready within around 3 hours and is then added to the water being treated, either manually or with a dosing pump. The water's pH value should be between 4 and 10. The concentration required depends on the infrastructure (tanks, pipes, filters) and the quality of the source water.

Basic dosage: 10 ml biostream® ZERO per 1 litre of water (equivalent to 10 ml/l)

Non-binding guidance. The product label, operating instructions and the applicable codes of practice are authoritative. Use biocides safely. Material compatibility applies when the recommended dosage and contact time are observed.

Efficacy: study and practice

A study commissioned by biostream® GmbH and decades of practical use demonstrate the performance of the active substance.

Study at Leibniz University Hannover

A study commissioned by biostream® GmbH at the Institute of Food Science and Human Nutrition of Leibniz University Hannover (led by Dr. rer. nat. H.-D. Werlein) confirms in 1,620 individual tests an efficacy of 99.9 % of biostream® ZERO against germs occurring in drinking water, at contact times of only 5 minutes.

biostream® products have been used successfully since 2001 in rail vehicles, on ships, in hospitals and clinics and by well-known beverage manufacturers.

Fighting Legionella and biofilms in drinking water

Fighting Legionella and biofilms

Legionella (e.g. Legionella pneumophila) are an often underestimated water hygiene problem.

They settle in biofilms. biostream® ZERO works deep into the biofilm; its active substance chlorine dioxide is included in the list of permitted treatment substances under Section 20 of the Drinking Water Ordinance.

Use biocides safely. Always read the label and product information before use. All statements on efficacy are based on biostream® GmbH's many years of experience as well as information from specialist literature, legislation, codes of practice and positive customer references. Material compatibility applies when the recommended dosage and contact time are observed.

What it is not

Process water of drinking water quality is an application, not a separate product: biostream® ZERO is used; quantities and contact times are given in the dosing instructions, not on this page.
