Disinfecting soda makers with biostream® asepticaPRO

Disinfect your soda maker: with the chlorine dioxide active substance used by waterworks, against bacteria in drinking water carbonators and refillable bottles.

Soda makers carbonate tap water and deliver low-cost, homemade sparkling water. To keep it hygienically impeccable, disinfect the appliance and bottles regularly with biostream® asepticaPRO.

Risks from drinking water carbonators

How do soda makers become a hazard, and what role do bacteria and germs play?

Disinfecting a soda maker with biostream® asepticaPRO

Many people enjoy the refreshing "sparkling taste." Water straight from the tap, however, contains no sparkling CO2. Soda makers carbonate the tap water. Only clean tap water that is free of lead and other harmful substances should be used.

However, bacteria in soda makers can pose a health risk. A few simple rules of behaviour easily prevent germs and bacteria from contaminating them.

Risks from bacteria in the soda maker

Refillable bottles are often cleaned poorly or not at all: ideal conditions for germs.

Reusable glass and PET bottles are cleaned by the beverage industry using elaborate processes before being refilled. Refillable bottles for soda makers, however, are often cleaned poorly or not at all, or cleaning is made harder by narrow bottle necks. This can lead to the growth of harmful germs and bacteria such as E. coli in and on the bottles or under the cap seals. biostream® asepticaPRO is the right solution for you.

The active substance chlorine dioxide, which is also used by waterworks, fights exactly these harmful bacteria responsible for microbial contamination of soda makers and their bottles.

In some cases, contamination by germs and bacteria can also cause serious gastrointestinal problems. The risk is even greater when drinking directly from the bottles. If carbonated water is already mixed with syrup or fruit juice in the bottles, the risk increases further. Bacteria can also get into water bottles from water filters that are not replaced regularly.

How simple, effective disinfection works

Disinfect your bottles and your soda maker regularly.

biostream® asepticaPRO for disinfecting drinking water: also outdoors
  • Pour the activated cleaning or disinfection solution into a 1 litre PET bottle.
  • Top up with water and insert the bottle into the appliance.
  • Carbonate the water until the excess pressure escapes audibly three times (a loud hiss).
  • Leave the bottle in the appliance for at least 60 minutes.
  • Then remove the bottle and rinse it once with drinking water. Done.

Efficacy: study and practice

A study commissioned by biostream® GmbH and decades of practical use demonstrate the performance of biostream® products.

Dr. rer. nat. H.-D. Werlein, Leibniz University Hannover

Study at Leibniz University Hannover

A study commissioned by biostream® GmbH at the Institute of Food Science and Human Nutrition of Leibniz University Hannover (led by Dr. rer. nat. H.-D. Werlein) confirms in 1,620 individual tests an efficacy of 99.9 % of the product biostream® ZERO against germs occurring in drinking water, at contact times of only 5 minutes.

biostream® products have been used successfully for disinfection since 2001 in rail vehicles, on ships, in many hospitals and clinics and by well-known beverage manufacturers. Dr. rer. nat. Hans-Dieter Werlein is responsible for the field of food hygiene and microbiology.

Fighting Legionella and biofilms for good

Legionella (e.g. Legionella pneumophila) are an often underestimated water hygiene problem and the cause of Legionnaires' disease (legionellosis).

Legionella settle in biofilms. The active substance chlorine dioxide is on the list of treatment substances and disinfection processes under Section 20 of the German Drinking Water Ordinance.

Chlorine dioxide: the proven active substance for drinking water disinfection

Basics

The active substance in asepticaPRO has been used successfully to disinfect drinking water in waterworks since the mid-1950s, and has repeatedly replaced its namesake chlorine, which can form harmful disinfection by-products.

biostream® asepticaPRO is an effective biocide with the active substance chlorine dioxide, which is effective against bacteria even at very low concentrations and across a very wide pH range.

Information on storage and handling is given on the label and in the safety data sheet.

Hydrogen peroxide and silver on the list under Section 20 of the Drinking Water Ordinance

The biostream® ZERO and asepticaPRO products comply with DIN 2001-2:2009-04 (drinking water supply from small and non-stationary installations) and are effective across the entire drinking water pH range. Hydrogen peroxide is not listed as a disinfectant in the DIN standard. It is also listed exclusively as an oxidising agent in the German Environment Agency's current UBA list.

In DIN 2001-2, silver is named not as a disinfectant but only as a preservative. The DIN standard notes on this: "Only in exceptional cases when storing drinking water without use over a longer period. Preservation does not replace disinfection of drinking water that is not impeccable, where this is required."

Did you know? Hydrogen peroxide is not listed as a disinfectant under Section 20 of the German Drinking Water Ordinance. Under the UBA list under Section 20 of the Drinking Water Ordinance, hydrogen peroxide is listed there only for the purpose "oxidising agent" and not as a "disinfectant."
